It was announced today (January 26th 2012), that renowned skipper Giovanni Soldini will, with a crew of seven others attempt a speed record between Cadiz, Spain, and San Salvador in the Bahamas in the completely overhauled Yacht Maserati, formerly, the Ericsson 3 VO70. Maserati will be the first monohull in which the 3884 mile course record will have been attempted. Additionally, it will not be the only record Soldini will attempt in Maserati in 2012, as he will also have a go at the records for Miami to New York and New York to the Lizard.

Backing for the challenge comes from Maserati, who will be the main partner in the adventure, hence the new name for the boat. Maserati is joined in the venture by Swiss bank BSI and by Generali.
